With the help of veterinary volunteers from World Vets, we held 5 sterilization campaigns in and around San Juan del Sur this summer.

World Vets has since produced a book of their project in our community, which is made possible through the support of Fondation Brigitte Bardot. It is called "World Vets in Action" it can be found on Blurb.com.

206 Animals Treated in 3 Days!

World Vets Team 1 provided veterinary services to the town of Rivas in collaboration with the La Escuela de Agricultura May 18 - 20. In just 3 days they managed to treat 206 animals! One World Vets volunteer gave an interview to two local television channels during the clinic - we hope this encourages more people to bring their animals next week.

World Vets Team 2 arrives today to continue veterinary services in Rivas this coming week at the La Escuela de Agricultura, May 25 -27.

World Vets Team 3 & 4 will be providing veterinary services in San Juan del Sur, June 1 - 3 and June 8 - 10.

All veterinary services are provided free for Nicaraguan citizens; spay neuter, health consultations and other surgeries when necessary.

World Vets brings Veterinary Research to San Juan del Sur

For one whole month World Vets will maintain a presence in our community during May and June of this year. Together with Stones & Waves Veterinary Clinic, they will provide back to back clinics for Rivas and San Juan del Sur respectively.

The animals that are treated during these clinics will take part and provide valuable data for two veterinary research studies. The first is headed up by World Vets volunteer Laura Baltodano and will examine the after results following spay neuter surgery; making note of any reoccurring issues and/or lack thereof. The objective of this study is to provide more information regarding the overall safety and effectiveness of the mobile surgery clinic operated by World Vets.

The second is a long term TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor) study out of the United Kingdom, lead by a Dr. Murchison. World Vets has been asked to take samples for this study at their various project locations. Sample collection kits are being provided to trip leaders for use during the May and June clinics in our community.

Illegal Wildlife Trade

NGO Paso Pacifico does a great job at raising awareness about a very real and ever growing problem in Nicaragua - the illegal trafficking of wildlife. From monkeys and birds as pets, to turtle eggs for the libido, and iguanas for a meal and leather bags; their place is in the forest, the sea and the air - not in a house or to make a fashion statement!

World Vets Clinic Results

We'd like to thank World Vets and all of our local volunteers who took part in the spay neuter clinic!

After 3 days of clinic 84 spay neuter surgeries were performed, along with one enucleation, one mucocele and one aural hematoma repair, and about 50 animals for health consultations. We also have 11 cases of TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor) to be treated at a special clinic held at Stones & Waves in 2 weeks.

With the help of our friends at World Vets, the spider monkeys under our care were also relocated to their new sanctuary at Domitila Reserva Privada, located outside of Granada, Nicaragua. We'd like to thank Paso Pacifico for assisting us in this whole process and of course Maria Jose for providing such a wonderful environment for these monkeys to thrive in.

Upcoming Spay Neuter Clinic

A team of World Vets volunteers will be visiting again to provide much needed spay neuter services to our community! They will also be doing consultations and any other surgery needed to treat all ailments and to see ANY and EVERY animal that needs veterinary assistance.

We are looking for community support in the form of bottled water, old sheets and towels and volunteers willing to prepare and/or donate lunch for the group during the clinic.

Remember Surfer?

Our volunteer vet/tech team from November, Courtney Pierce and Andrea Flynn, successfully raised enough money for Surfer to be sent to Oldtown Veterinary Hospital in North Carolina. He had suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car more than 6 months ago, however now he is receiving the critical care that he needs. With all the technology provided at their hospital the extent of all his troubles are being revealed; giarida and ehrlichia infections, a broken left leg,and the right side of his pelvis is broken and rotated inward.

Nevertheless, our former Nicaraguan beach dog, Surfer, is adjusting quite well to his new surroundings and believe it or not LOVES snow!

January Clinic Results

After 3 and 1/2 days of clinic and almost pulling an all nighter, 30 animals have been sterilized and 48 animals have been seen in total. 5 of the animals sterilized were our female spider monkeys to prepare for their relocation to the soon to be established monkey sanctuary at Domitila Reserva Silvestre Privada.

Our hats are off to Mike Corcoran and Adrien Zap! Go team! They came as part of our volunteer vet program, sponsored by Piedras y Olas Hotel.

We would like to thank everyone that brought in their animals and for your very generous donations. We can't keep it up without your support!

We are now looking for a vet and tech team at the end of March to cover spay neuter aftercare following our World Vets community wide clinic.

A Monkey Collaboration

Since last year we have been campaigning to build a primate enclosure for our 6 rescued spider monkeys. Due to current changes at their present location we are unable to realize its construction at their present site. As such, our friends at Paso Pacifico have helped us find a great alternative location to build the enclosure that will house our monkey population.

Our newest collaboration is with Domitila Reserva Silvestre Privada located at the foot hills of Mombacho volcano, where our monkeys will call home. We are excited to inform you that construction will commence in the next few weeks!

We still require contributions to complete the project and any support that can be given is greatly appreciated. Donations can be made through Fundacion A Jean Brugger and should note monkeys or enclosure on the description

Flipper, our resident pelican, had a fateful run in with a boat propeller that has left him unable to fly. He needs someone to provide him a pool full of water and some fresh fish!

Clinic hours are as follows:

January 23rd:
8 am - 12 pm Spay Neuter Surgery
2 pm - 4 pm Consultations

January 24th:
8 am - 12 pm Spay Neuter Surgery
2 pm - 4 pm Consultations

We strongly advise that you contact us and schedule any spay neuter surgery ahead of time. This will help us prepare for the right number animals - we do not want to turn anyone away for lack of medicines and supplies. Please write to veterinarian@piedrasyolas.com
If we receive many requests for spay neuter surgery we will open Monday 25th to meet demand.

Cats Need Homes

For five years our veterinary clinic has operated in part as an animal shelter and took in abandoned kittens and cats that showed up on our doorstep. Over the years we managed to accumulate 60 + cats! We have a very strong spay neuter program and every cat that entered has always been sterilized. So why did our cat population continue to grow?

It may not come as a surprise for many to learn that cats suffer a very bad reputation in Nicaragua. They are not the most desirable pet and in fact are used as the scapegoat for many issues that may plague a household or even a community. The concept of sterilization is also new and until we began our program there was not anyone here that was capable of providing this service, and free of charge at that!

Fortunately we have seen the results of our sterilization efforts and for that we believe our community now sees the benefit of this service. Less and less kittens have been left in garbage bins and on the side of the road in bags.

While we have provided food, shelter and veterinary care for all of these cats it has also become very difficult for us to keep up with this effort. We have managed to find homes for 38 cats thanks to the help of our many friends and supporters. However we still have many domestic cats that still need homes. Donate to Surfer's Surgery

During a spay neuter clinic this past year, we received a dog that had been hit by a car at one of the local beaches. "Surfer" has been under our care ever since however we lack the necessary equipment and the staff to properly diagnose or treat Surfer's injuries, the worst of which is a badly damaged hip.

Our most recent volunteer vet and technician from Oldtown Veterinary Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina visited the clinic and realized that Surfer would be a wonderful pet for someone, if only his damaged hip could be repaired. He is in constant pain. They are raising money to send him to their clinic for surgery and to be adopted.

Please donate to Surfer's fund! He is a sweet dog who has led a very hard life and deserves a chance to live pain-free in a loving home!

Cycle 4 Strays

The McKee project is dedicated to animal welfare in Latin America. They provide veterinary services to communities within and beyond the borders of Costa Rica and also provide education and training to those interested in small animal medicine and spay neuter techniques. Stones & Waves actively promotes and collaborates with McKee's activities in Nicaragua.

This January they are hosting a charity bicycle adventure from Utah to Costa Rica for animal wellness.

Help Build Primate Enclosure

We care for six spider monkeys, 1 male and 5 females. Many of them were previously owned pets, purchased on the street as young infants and later abandoned when they matured.

We have undertaken a project to improve their quality of life by constructing a primate enclosure. To help us fundraise for this project, we have created a Cause on Facebook.

During this holiday season we ask that you help us raise funds while you shop and search online. Its simple. We Need a Volunteer Vet for January

Our volunteer veterinarian program gives practicing vets the opportunity to take a working holiday! You visit for a week and work a minimum of 3 days at our clinic and/or in the community. Activities that you can expect are performing spay neuter surgeries, consultations, giving vaccinations, tending to emergencies and assisting us in our Preventative Health Companion Animal Program and/or spay neuter aftercare.

We are currently looking for a veterinarian for the month of January, however we would love to schedule as many visiting vets ahead of time for each month in 2010.
